2/6/2019 – New IRS Tax Scams
The IRS Office in Pittsburgh, PA provided the following information regarding new IRS tax scams. Please be aware and contact the IRS HELPLINE at 1-800-829-1040 if you have questions or to report a fake notice.
BE AWARE of scammers sending fake notices to trick people into sending money or ‘verifying’ their personal information, such as:
- Paper CP2000 Notices (via US Mail) showing a balance due with an address that is NOT AN IRS ADDRESS
- Email notices indicating that you have a refund due with enclosed form. The form is NOT FROM THE IRS
Authentic IRS notices DO NOT demand that you send payments via pre-paid or gift cards.
Authentic IRS notices ARE NOT sent via email, text, or social media.
