Cyber Security Awareness for Tax Season

Taxes + Security = Together Banner

At AmeriServ, we want to do everything possible to help educate the public against cyber crime. That’s why we encourage participation in national cyber security programs like Stop.Think.Connect., Data Privacy Day, and National Cyber Security Awareness Month.

This time of year, cyber criminals often attempt to take advantage of taxpayers by staging fraudulent phone calls or sending fraudulent emails claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service. If you receive a phone call or email from someone who threatens you or demands that you provide them with private, personal information – be cautious.

The IRS has gone on record stating, “The IRS doesn’t initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information. This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS does not call taxpayers with threats of lawsuits or arrests.
